Lunations: Eclipses - Lunar Eclipses and Solar Eclipses 2010

The Cambridge Eclipse Photography Guide: How and Where to Observe and Photograph Solar and Lunar Eclipses
Lunations: Eclipses - Lunar Eclipses and Solar Eclipses 2010

Lunation (or New Moon and Full Moon) charts have been used by Mundane Astrologers for many centuries. In later times, people began to compare them to their natal charts.

The New Moon, or Conjunction, is used when you want to start something new or try to break some old patterns. That is the time of the month when you would attempt to start or do these kinds of things. The New Moon is the time of internalizing and looking within yourself.

The Full Moon, or Opposition, is the time when you would try to accomplish the things that were started on a New Moon. The Full Moon is when you look to external events or things get beyond your control.

Things to look at when comparing the Lunation charts to your own:
  • Houses that the Sun and Moon are transiting in your natal chart.
  • What aspects do the Sun and Moon make to your natal planets? Are the majority of those aspects easy or hard?
  • Astrologers also look at the transits to the Lunation charts, particularly to the Moon.

Eclipses

An eclipse is a far more potent lunation. Look to the house the eclipse falls in your natal chart. The affairs of that house will be activated. Does the eclipse fall on a planet in your natal chart? That planet will also be activated. The sign of the eclipse plays a role in the likely events that the eclipse will trigger.

Many people tend to fear eclipses, simply because they often bring about a crisis of sorts that leads to a significant event or change. However, this event or change can be very positive.

Eclipses are tied to changing circumstances. However, we are usually the ones to precipitate or to attract changes because our "inner guides" know that we need it. Human beings are progressive by nature, and although we might stay in situations that are making us miserable for longer than we should, deep down inside we know that change is necessary for growth.

The 12 Moon Signs In Love: A Lover's Guide To Understanding Your PartnerAstrology of the Moon: An Illuminating Journey Through the Signs and HousesSun and Moon Signs: An Illustrated Guide to Astrological Characteristics

This Week in Astrology

Full Moon Lunar Eclipse Wednesday, June 15, 2011, at 4:14 PM EDT.

On Wednesday afternoon, a Full Moon Lunar Eclipse occurs. Lunar Eclipses are about relationships and polarities. With the Gemini-Sagittarius axis involved, this Lunar Eclipse presses us to look more closely at our needs, lacks, and wants in our lives concerning the balance between Gemini-ruled and Sagittarius ruled areas of life. The Gemini-Sagittarius polarity is a mental axis, where Gemini represents the "lower mind" and Sagittarius represents the "higher mind". The Gemini Sun encourages us to think logically, while the Sagittarius Moon persuades us to intuit, and to think in a broader manner. Sagittarius symbolizes the quest for meaning and ideas that expand upon the "here and now". Gemini is quite comfortable in his or her immediate environment or neighborhood, while Sagittarius stimulates us to venture beyond it. Neglecting either end of the axis will surely backfire on us. Ideally, a balance should be found between the two energies, and this is what the Lunar Eclipse invites us to do. This eclipse is about communication, attitude, and our sense of adventure. Something has been building inside of us, and now is the time when the energy of the cosmos fairly demands that we let it out. Over the coming weeks, we will discover what this means for us. For now, we can't sit on our feelings. We need to express them.

Some sort of crisis (which can be a crisis of consciousness) or sudden awareness of a lack in our lives provides us with a golden opportunity to explore our emotional needs within the context of the house polarity where the eclipse occurs in our natal charts. Relationships may be challenged, broken, or strengthened dramatically at this time. Our discovery is emotionally charged and dramatic. Epiphanies are likely at this time as we become acutely aware of our lack. This understanding can propel us into positive action, although there can be some level of chaos initially.

Lunar Gardening - Gardening by the Phases of the Moon

Moon Phases and Planting

Planting by the phases of the moon is a method of cultivation as old as agriculture and civilization. Based both in tradition and superstition, the character and growth traits of plants were seen to vary with the phases of the moon. Through the corridors of time this rhythm of growth was recorded and passed down to following generations.

Today we have access to this half forgotten knowledge and what has endured is a schedule of plant growth that we can use just as those gardeners of yore. It is an example of mankinds struggle to understand and harness the forces of nature and in so doing master this world.

Moon, Tides, Seeds and Water

The Earth is in a gravity well that is constantly altered by both the sun, moon and planets. The ocean tides are at their highest during the time of the full moon, when the sun and moon are lined up with the earth. The ancients believed that as the moon draws the tides in the seas, it also draws upon all water, causing moisture to swell up in the earth, which promotes growth. This is the best time for planting seeds.

The Full Moon: A window of opportunity for planting seeds

When the moon is full the lunar gravity draws water up and causes seeds to germinate. It was also believed, in ancient times, that the increasing moonlight created balanced root and leaf growth. This, they thought, was the best time for planting above ground annual crops that produce their seeds outside the fruit. Examples of such crops are lettuce, spinach, celery, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and grain crops. Through time and trials cucumbers were thought to like this phase also, even though they are an exception to the rule.

The Second Quarter Moon: A window of opportunity for planting above ground crops

In the second quarter moon (i.e. waxing half moon) the pull of gravity is less, but the moonlight is substantial and on the increase, which was believed to encourage strong leaf growth. It was generally considered a good time for most types of planting and the prime time for this was usually two days before the full moon. The types of crops that prefer the second quarter moon are annuals that produce their fruits above the ground, but the seeds form inside the fruit, such as beans, melons, peas, peppers, squash, and tomatoes.

The Third Quarter Moon: A window of opportunity for planting root crops

When the moon enters the third quarter its light is diminishing (i.e. waning half moon), the light energy is dwindling. But during this time the gravitational pull is still quite high, creating increased moisture in the soil. Also, at this time the moonlight is decreasing, which our forefathers believed was putting energy into the roots. This was thought to be an excellent time for planting root crops which include beets, carrots, onions, potatoes, and peanuts. It is also considered a good time for planting perennials, biennials, bulbs and transplanting because of the active root growth. Pruning is also best done in the third quarter moon.

The New Moon: An opportunity for maintaining the garden

At the time of the new moon both the gravitational pull and the moonlight are decreasing and was thus considered a resting period. Growth during this period was believed to be stable and steady providing strength to the plants and a good time for maintenance. This was predicted to be the best time to cultivate, harvest, transplant and prune.

Brother Sun and Sister Moon

The role of the sun and the moon in agriculture is undeniable. The sun powers the forces of growth and the moon enhances or discourages the various stages of plant formation. This was believed by many generations of gardeners to be the ultimate guide to robust crops. We can either accept or omit this system of understanding the nature of plant maturation but in the end we are but stewards in this cycle of life.

Astrology on the Web: Mother's Day

Astrology on the Web: Mother's Day

Celebrate those who nurture, protect and love: Mothers

Mother's Day
Celebration of the Feminine

From the spring days of Ancient Rome to modern times, people have honoured Mama. Games, goddesses, saints and social workers have honoured the feminine and called on us to remember our mothers. In the United States, Mother's Day started nearly 150 years ago, when Anna Jarvis, an Appalachian homemaker, organized a day to raise health awareness in her community—a cause best advocated by mothers. She called it "Mother's Work Day". Nowadays, the second Sunday in May (May 8, 2011) is Mother's Day in many countries. Rob Tillett looks at the history and meaning of Mother's Day.
The second Sunday in May (May 8, 2011) is Mother's Day, a day we traditionally set aside for honouring Mother and, from a deeper perspective, the role of the feminine in our lives. What better day could we pick for sending our healing prayers and energy to Mother Earth, the Great Mother that nurtures us all? There are so many mothers on the planet who are suffering today, yet no more than the Earth itself. That is why we are asking all of you, tens of thousands of people around the world, to use May 8th to offer your energy to the healing of all mothers.
Earliest Known Tributes
The earliest known tributes to mothers date back to the annual spring festival the Ancient Greeks dedicated to the great goddess Rhea, wife of Cronus and mother of the Olympians. In fact, all the ancient peoples of Europe, from Ireland to Asia had a Mother Goddess (known widely as Danu, but also under many other names). These celebrations were mirrored in the offerings ancient Romans made to the Great Mother Goddess, Cybele. Ceremonies in her honour began some 250 years before the birth of Christ.

This Roman religious celebration, known as Hilaria Matris Deum, lasted for three days – from March 22 to 25. Its celebration was held on the first day after the vernal equinox, the first day of the year which was longer than the night. The winter with its gloom had passed away, and the first day of a better season was spent in rejoicings. Games and processions were held in her honour. In the British Isles and Celtic Europe, the goddess Brigid, and later her successor St. Brigid, were honoured with a spring Mother's Day, connected with the first milk of the ewes (see Celtic Fire Festivals: Oimelc).
Mothering Sunday
In later times, Christians celebrated this festival on the fourth Sunday in Lent, in honour of Mary, mother of Jesus. During the 1600's England began to celebrate a day called Mothering Sunday on the fourth Sunday in Lent. Originally, it was a time for visiting one's "mother church" – the church in the town where one hailed from, and people would travel back home to attend – but gradually it came to be a day for honouring one's mother and giving her gifts.

Anna Jarvis, Founder of Mother's Day
On Mothering Sunday, young apprentices and servants returned home, bringing their mothers flowers, small gifts and keepsakes or a "mothering cake". Mothering Sunday was also known as Refreshment Sunday, because the fasting rules for Lent were relaxed that day. Although this is often called "Mother's Day" in the UK, it actually has no direct relation to the US festival of that name.
Modern Mother's Day
In the United States, Mother's Day started nearly 150 years ago, when Anna Jarvis, an Appalachian homemaker, organized a day to raise awareness of poor health conditions in her community, a cause she believed would be best advocated by mothers. She called it "Mother's Work Day".
Fifteen years later, Julia Ward Howe, a Boston poet, pacifist, suffragist, and author of the lyrics to the Battle Hymn of the Republic, organized a day encouraging mothers to rally for peace, since she believed they bore the loss of human life more harshly than anyone else.
In 1905 when Anna Jarvis died, her daughter, also named Anna, began a campaign to memorialize the life work of her mother. Legend has it that young Anna remembered a Sunday school lesson that her mother gave in which she said, "I hope and pray that someone, sometime, will found a memorial mother's day. There are many days for men, but none for mothers."
Anna began to lobby prominent businessmen like John Wannamaker, and politicians including Presidents Taft and Roosevelt to support her campaign to create a special day to honor mothers. At one of the first services organized to celebrate Anna's mother in 1908, at her church in West Virginia, Anna handed out her mother's favourite flower, the white carnation (which remains popular for modern Mother's Day flowers and bouquets). Five years later, the House of Representatives adopted a resolution calling for officials of the federal government to wear white carnations on Mother's Day. In 1914 Anna's hard work paid off when Woodrow Wilson signed a bill recognizing Mother's Day as a national holiday.
The Law of Unintended Consequences?
At first, people observed Mother's Day by attending church, writing letters to their mothers, and eventually, by sending cards, presents, and flowers. With the increasing gift-giving activity associated with Mother's Day, Anna Jarvis became enraged. She believed that the day's sentiment was being sacrificed on the altar of greed and profit.
In 1923 she filed a lawsuit to stop a Mother's Day festival, and was even arrested for disturbing the peace at a convention selling carnations for a war mothers' group. Before her death in 1948, Jarvis is said to have confessed that she regretted ever starting the Mother's Day tradition.
Despite Jarvis's misgivings, Mother's Day has flourished in the United States. In fact, the second Sunday of May has become the most popular day of the year to dine out, and telephone lines record their highest traffic, as sons and daughters everywhere take advantage of this day to honour and to express appreciation of their mothers.
Many other countries also celebrate Mother's Day at this time, including Australia, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey and Belgium, while other nations celebrate their own Mother's Day at different times throughout the year.
This is the end of the article.

Gift Ideas for every Mom in the Zodiac

With Mother's Day right around the corner, let's examine and celebrate the different personality types of moms everywhere based on their zodiac sign. If you still haven't thought of the perfect Mother's Day gift, I'll clue you in on some great ideas too!

Aries - The Aries mom is bold, daring, and likes to be in charge. She's smart, sassy, and expects her kids to jump when she calls. She pushes her kids hard, and expects them to be competitive and the best at everything. She sets high standards for herself and expects nothing less of her family too. She loves to try new things, like the latest fashion fads. She's a bit bossy, but as long as you follow her orders, life is grand! The Aries mom is a "take charge" type of woman whose inner strength cannot be denied.
Gift ideas: personalized jewelry and clothing; the latest fads and fashions

Taurus - The Taurus mom is dependable and hard-working. She is one of the most domesticated of all signs and works hard to give her kids a solid home base. She can be quite stubborn and once she makes her mind up, cannot be pushed to change it. She's down to earth, logical and family oriented. She has a lot of patience but when she gets riled, watch out. This mom has quite a temper! She is money motivated and wants to make sure there's always "enough" cash in her checkbook and rainy day account. This woman can spot a bargain a mile away and knows how to squeeze a dollar out of a dime.
Gift ideas: gift certificates, dining out, jewelry, homemade goodies, gift baskets

Gemini - This mom ages in reverse. She's a kid at heart: fun loving, chatty and social. She loves a good time and often goes out of her way to make sure her kids are involved in lots of fun activities. The Gemini mom will talk your ear off, and she'll love to go shopping with you. She wants to be your best friend. She'll try anything once and is not afraid to learn new things. The Gemini will often have a desire to return to school at some point hi her life. Sometimes she can be a little moody, but overall, she's just plain fun!
Gift ideas: books, phone and gas cards, stationary and accessories, candy

Cancer - Moms born under the sign of Cancer are said to be the best at parenting. They can be overprotective however and a little bossy, but they are also nurturing, sentimental, emotional, and very loving. They would do anything for their children. They love being a mom. It comes natural for them and they are usually quite good at it. However, a Cancer mom doesn't forget a thing. She has memory like an elephant. She'll remember what you wore for your kindergarten graduation recital. She'll recall your blind date's last name, even though you've long forgot it. This mom tends to live a long life. She'll be around a long time, and you can count on her for anything.
Gift ideas: personal photos, sentimental homemade gifts, antiques, a day spent together

Leo - This mom will dazzle you with her wonderful personality and charisma. She'll win you over with her generous heart but she wants you to admire and respect her and yes, sometimes even put her on a pedestal. After all, she is the queen of the zodiac and expects to be treated as such. She would never let her children go without anything they might need. She fusses over them and brags to others about how wonderful they are. She can be a hard worker, wanting to give her kids all that money can buy. She also loves to treat her children to special experiences and travels, and sometimes she is generous to a fault. If you give this mom one hundred percent, she'll top it by giving back one hundred fifty.
Gift ideas: anything 14k gold, pretty jewelry, colorful clothes, a trip to Las Vegas, or a day at a casino.

Virgo - Yes this mom can be fussy and nitpicky and always tell you what to do. Wear your coat outside. Bundle up. Take your vitamins. She cares...alot. She analyzes every little thing you do and probably sticks her nose in your business (although she would not admit it). She doesn't mean to meddle but she loves you so much and wants your life to be perfect! Your date for the prom will never measure up to her standards. But who cares? She loves you and that's her way of showing it: pushing you to be more, to reach the potential she sees in you. This mom does everything for everybody but seldom does she take time out for herself. She needs to be needed.
Gift ideas: a day at a spa, household gadgets to make her life easier, a nice watch.

Libra - If your mom is a Libra, she is probably funny, pretty, social and charming. She like peace and harmony and hates to fight. But if you push her too far, watch out! She can put up with a lot but once she blows steam, run for cover! She believes in love and romance. She's apt to be ladylike and nice to everyone, even the people she doesn't like much. She can be a little indecisive and hates to be alone. She'll probably want to live close to you when she grows old, so make sure you buy a comfy mother-in-law apartment.
Gift ideas: jewelry, perfume, shoes, purses

Scorpio - This mom seems very stern and serious at times, but she is a softie at heart. She has very intense emotions but seldom does she let anyone see how see really feels. She has a poker face and acts as if she couldn't hurt a fly. But watch out, she's a control freak! This is the woman who does have eyes in the back of her head, who knows your every move even if you are miles away. She's a loyal, steadfast mom—someone you would want in your comer. She's determined and strong. She'll teach about using your inner strength and power. She'll always be a bit of a mystery to you.
Gift ideas: scented candles, astrology readings, exotic tea and coffee gift basket, movie tickets

Sagittarius - Sporty, free-spirited and fun...these words all describe the Sagittarius mom. She's likely got a positive personality and is a great conversationalist. She may not be the best housekeeper (I know mine wasn't) but everyone will always be welcome in her humble abode. This mom may also be one of your spiritual teachers as she pushes you to delve deep into the mysteries, philosophies, and meanings of life.
Gift ideas: books, concert tickets, stuff for her car, travel gift certificates, gym memberships

Capricorn - She can be stern, she can be strict, .but the Capricorn mother is always reliable, dependable and a pillar of strength for her children. She is not a mushy, emotional-type mama—she's more apt to be logical and strong willed. You know where you stand with her. She wants the best for her children, and will often push them into higher education and motivate them to excel at work. She can be demanding, but the pressure she put on her kids is to lovingly help them find their place in the world and be able to compete in today's society. A strong family and old-fashioned values are important to this lady.
Gift ideas - designer or status-symbol items, practical gifts she can use around the home or office. Gift certificates to her favorite store.

Aquarius - This is a cool, funky, fun-loving mom. Some Aquarius moms can be a little eccentric. "Unique" is a good word used to describe them. These mamas want to save the world! They want to somehow make the world a better place in which to live. They are friendly and outgoing and usually belong to a number of groups. Aquarius moms love to have company over. Friendships are important to them. These moms will allow you to have a bit more freedom that other moms and encourage your self expression. Nothing surprises them. They can be strong-willed, but there's never a dull moment.
Gift ideas: new gadgets and gizmos, anything to with computers or electronics, favorite CDs, donations to their favorite charity

Pisces - She can be sentimental and oh so sensitive. This dreamy mom loves her children very much but she worries about them very much too. She's artistic and romantic, and she can cry at the drop of a hat. She loves getting lost in a good book or movie. However, the Pisces mom can be a little indecisive, and at times, a bit of a pushover. She feels guilty over the littlest of things. She loves to please people, but her kids usually come first in her book. She's very psychic too, and intuitively knows her children's needs and wants.
Gift ideas: romance novels, shoes (she loves shoes!), gourmet chocolates, satin pajamas

Tonight's Full Moon w/ Lunar Eclipse Falls on Winter Solstice Dec 21, 2010

Full Moon Lunar Eclipse falls on Winter Solstice
December 21st, 2010

Tonight's full moon brings in the Winter Solstice and also bestows upon us the beauty and grace of a lunar eclipse. On this eve of Winter, a total lunar eclipse will be viewable over all of America.

To me, the Full Moon is a mirror of inner beauty, it's reflection shows us our true brilliant nature.

It is a reminder of divine feminine power, the magic of true, natural inner beauty which we all possess.

It is a loving reminder from the Universe that we are all beautiful and we are all united in Love.

The Winter Solstice has long been a celebrated seasonal holiday throughout many cultures for thousands of years. Winter Solstice is the longest night of the year....the beginning of the end of the dark days (in the Northern Hemisphere). Early civilizations held sacred ceremonies and rituals to mark the Winter Solstice. They celebrated the changing season with rituals and festivities to call upon the return of the Sun. The Winter was a frightening time in primitive cultures. People thought the Gods deserted them in the Winter and left them to survive the harsh winter on their own. Winter Solstice was a celebration of the return of the light. It was a celebration of renewed hope, a time of prayer and worship. People danced and prayed in honor of the Sun, they made sacrifices to show their love and devotion to the Sun God and sought his return.

Natives of the earliest civilizations known to man observed the moon as a heavenly body and held special rituals of worship to honor the Full moon. In fact, some of the holidays observed today are deliberately pre-arranged on the modern day calendar in accordance with the Full Moon. (For example, Easter)

In ancient customs, a full moon on the night of the Winter Solstice would have been a special treat. Throw a lunar eclipse in there and you have a very rare and extra special holy blessing from the heavens, a significant moment to be appreciated, respected and worshipped.

We can only imagine how our ancestors would have viewed tonight's celestial event. I presume they would find it extraordinarily special and hold special ceremonies in honor and observation of this marvelous celestial occasion.

Eclipses bring changes, and their influence is considered about 10 times that of a normal full or new moon. Tonight, use this especially powerful opportunity to tap into the universal love and inner beauty that the moon symbolizes. Take a moment to admire the soft elegance of the Full moon's luster and bathe in the radiant beams of glimmering moonlight. Most of us get uneasy with change, even if it's positive. Eclipses can bring challenges and sometimes people experience hardships and strife during an eclipse. Tonight, let go and open up to embrace change and receive the benefits that it brings. If life did not bring changes we would not have the opportunity to grow emotionally and spiritually.

The Perfect Holiday Gift for Every Sign of the Zodiac

Still don't know what to get for that hard to buy for person on your Christmas shopping list? Worry no more. The zodiac can be a reliable guide to help you choose the perfect gift! You don't even have to know the person very well. All you need to know is their birthday. Here are some gift ideas custom fit to match the predispositions, personality traits and behavior tendencies of each astrological sign. Although there is much more to each of us than our sun sign, (we are all unique!) most people feel a strong kinship with their sun sign and say that it describes them quite accurately.

Aries

March 21 – April 19
The Ram loves any kind of form of challenge, contest and competition. He is the sign of action and loves being first. He knows he will get nowhere fast if he doesn't move faster. Anything to help him save time (or gain more time, through his eyes) is sure to be a hit. A high tech stopwatch, timed coffee maker, no-iron shirts, and any time saving gadget will excite them. Aries needs direction for their restless energy as well as their frustrations. Consider gifts that can help channel their intellectual energies to find solutions such as computer games, board games and puzzles. And for the restless fighting spirit, consider boxing gloves, gym memberships, or a basketball goal. Tickets to a sporting event are sure to be a winner with the Aries male. If buying clothing, he will like sporty clothes, team wear and baseball caps. Use compliments, anything that says #1 on it will appeal to the Aries ego. They will also appreciate personalized gifts, necklace with initials on it or an id bracelet. Aries rules the head, for women hair accessories, earrings and sunglasses, brightly colored clothes and accessories will be popular.

Taurus
April 20 – May 20
Taurus loves to shop, this makes them excellent candidates for gift certificates! They are drawn to luxury and they love things, especially expensive things, and they are avid collectors. Taurus LOVES collector's items. Especially trademark and brand name collectables. If you know what they are interested in, you're in luck. Just get a collectable of their favorite athlete, rock band, college or sports team and you're in the good. Taurus people have an appreciation for names like Harley Davidson, Disney, Pottery Barn and Ralph Lauren. Material things have sentimental value to Taurus, too. Keepsakes, mementos and little reminders of your love and adoration of them will go far. Scrap books, hand-made items, and anything with the current year on it will keep it's sentimental value to Taurus forever. Touch and feel is important so consider comfy pajamas, (Taurus women love anything silky or satiny) Egyptian cotton sheets, foot massager, bubbles and home spa products. Taurus rules the throat and neck, so necklaces and pendants, especially sapphire, Emerald, and Jade, will be appealing to them. They are lovers of food, especially the good life dining, gourmet foods, fine cheesecake and exquisite chocolates will appeal to their love of fine foods.

Gemini
May 21 – June 20
Gemini is always in need of something new to do. New experiences, hobbies, activities and events are good choices for their restless energy. Avoid anything time consuming or gifts or that requires a long term commitment. A gym membership requires a long term commitment and a Gemini will lose interest in a gift that is not useable or redeemable right away. Don't buy your Gemini friend a season pass for a water park in December. You can save that for their birthday. Gemini rules the mind and these people are very analytical and intellectual. They have an appetite for knowledge and are driven to seek information. Interesting books, magazine subscriptions and informational videos on their topics of their interest will get their attention. Appeal to their playfulness with whimsical toys, fun electronics or anything that gives their inner child permission to run free. You can help Gemini focus with strategic games like Chess and Memory, brain teaser puzzles and mind exercising video games. Since Gemini is always on the go, travel kits & luggage, automobile provisions, gas cards, and Motor Club memberships, will be well used by most Gemini. Ruled by Mercury, the planet of communication, cell phones and computers are important to keep Gemini up to date on the latest gossip. Cell phone and internet accessories, notebooks and all wireless communication devices will be make you popular. Don't forget to buy extra batteries, they're going to need them.

Cancer
June 21 – July 22
Every Cancer needs a cozy home. Contributing to the Crab's shell is the way to go. Anything to make their home both decorative and comfortable, decorative rock fountains, luminary lamps, exotic artwork, or candles will be pleasers. Cancer responds well to music, theatrics and movies that stir their emotions. They are much attached to family, so family heirlooms and personal mementos, hand made gifts, photo albums and scrapbooks, will have sentimental appeal to them. They are happiest when surrounded by their family and close relationships. A Cancer will be grateful for a fun family night, group tickets to a movie, play, concert or other entertainment event, anywhere they can create a new memory with their beloved family members and closest friends will mean the world to them. Cancer is a nurturing sign, most love to cook and especially enjoy cooking down home dinners for family and close friends in the home. Grilling or cooking utensils, cocktail shakers, specialty cookbooks and gift baskets with spices and sauces will be a treasure! The Cancer rules the domestic and will appreciate anything to help them improve, protect, and enjoy their home and family lief. Crabs are penny pinchers and like to save money, so anything that will help him cut expenses, increase his profits or protect his current assets will have value to him.

Leo
July 23 - August 22
This sign is ruled by the Sun and the element of fire. Just as the Sun is the center of our solar system, Leo loves being the center of attention. Leos naturally think of themselves as the King and Queen of their personal domains and are likely to have a pack of loyal friends who admire their regal charm. Lions love gifts that make them look and feel majestic. Jewelry, cosmetics and grooming items are all good choices for this prideful sign. If buying jewelry, go with Amber, Ruby or Diamond. Leos also love to gamble, so lottery tickets or a casino getaway will feed their guilty pleasure. When shopping for clothing, go for red, gold and purple. Fine champagne, gourmet cheeses and chocolates would be appropriated. They love to be pampered, so certificates for a massage, new hairstyle (Lion's love their manes groomed) a facial or manicure will also be well received. Leos love things that make them look and feel important. Brand names, designer logo bags (the bigger the better), flashy jewelry, anything in animal prints, a tiara or crown, of course, and all things extravagant will go over nicely with a Leo. Is a BMW too much to ask? Leo loves extravagance, but they still believe in true love. For a more romantic appeal, take her to a glitzy see-and-be-seen-restaurant, buy an expensive bottle of champagne and give her a flashy piece of jewelry in front of everyone to see! It doesn't have to be expensive. With Leo, it's not about the money. It's about attention.

Virgo
Aug. 23 - Sept. 22
Virgos, the most practical sign of the zodiac, are likely to appreciate gifts that they can use and that help to keep their life in order. They love practical gifts, so avoid dust-catching collectables and trinkets. A high performance food processor or power tool will do the trick. Virgos love to organize and will appreciate a good watch, a leather-bound date book or new briefcase. Space saving storage containers and nifty organizers will tickle their fancy. They love home improvement products, closet organizers, and anything to save energy and reduce cost. Meticulous at budgeting and balancing their finances, home office items such as a paper shredder, accounting software or desk accessories is sure to please Virgo's analytical mind. They are also known to pride themselves on their immaculate appearance. Body cleanliness and personal hygiene are important to them. Scented soaps, lotions, body sprays and perfume might be just the ticket. Virgos are also usually health-conscious and enjoy gifts that keep them in tip-top shape. A gift basket filled with organic herbs and spices, nutritious goodies, or a healthy lifestyle cookbook will be well received. Because they are so sensible, gift certificates will be appealing because Virgo can buy what they need rather than what someone else thinks they want. Books are likely to be well received although you might be better off buying non-fiction as opposed to fiction, especially topics on self-help, organization or how-to books.

Libra
Sept. 23 - Oct. 22
Librans have a special kinship with music and often have some musical talents up their sleeve. They will appreciate a good CD to add to their ample collection. If you want to really go all out for a Libra, go for concert tickets. Ruled by Venus, the planet of love and beauty, you can't go wrong with gifts that appeal to Libra's hopeless romantic side. If you're still stumped for ideas, a lavish bouquet of red roses accompanied by a loving handwritten note is all it takes to melt the Libra's heart. The sign of the scales, they need plenty of balance in their lives, so a pair of candlesticks or bookends might appeal. Strive to help them create peaceful surroundings to promote harmony and find balance. Elegant and tasteful art pieces and decor for the home would be appropriate, especially items in pairs. Two beautiful candle stick holders, matching crystal photo frames, a pair of wall sconces or twin book holders will delight Libra. If you're going for jewelry, an elegant watch or gem piece with opal, emerald, or jade will charm them for sure. For a Libra, it is the thought that matters most. They will be pleased with a hand made card and home baked goodies, as long as they can share the goodies with you. Most Libras hate to be alone. They are the sign of harmony and partnership, and very socially active, so a surprise event or celebration with their entire social circle will be a dream come true. They'll love gifts that give them moments they can share with you or their other loved ones.

Scorpio
Oct. 23 - Nov. 21
Scorpions are shadowy by nature and enjoy gifts that obscure their presence in some way. A pair of designer sunglasses, a knitted scarf or a droopy hat are all great picks. Scorpios are born detectives but keep much of their own life private. These curious mystery-lovers enjoy dark, moody stories and crime dramas. A collection of true crime DVD's and a popcorn tin are sure to appeal to the recluse Scorpion. They like to know the reasons behind everything, so books and informational videos and documentaries dealing with solving mysteries, police and detective work, the criminal mind, physics, psychology or spirituality will be attractive to Scorpio. Ruled by Pluto, the planet of death and reproductive forces, this sign is most well-known for their sexual appetite. Seductive lingerie would get plenty of use - if Scorpio girl is in a close intimate relationship, and as long as the lingerie is classy and in good taste. Don't insult her with perversion. They excel at writing, journals and diaries are good for helping them express and articulate their deepest inner emotions. Diaries with a lock are preferable to the secretive Scorpio. Better yet, a lockbox or a tamper-proof safe would be ideal. Since Scorpions are so private, a gift certificate may be fitting, for they may not want you to know what it is they really want. They can be fanatical workers and exert themselves until they drop, so tools to help them work more efficiently will make great useful gifts. Scorpios are loyal friends of the Zodiac and they are grateful for acts of kindness. Gifts of generosity are much appreciated by Scorpios, who will never ask someone to do what they would not do themselves. The greatest gift to a Scorpio is the gift of service, a helping hand with errands, repairs and odd jobs, anything to help them be more productive, to take some of the burden off and free their hands…so they can go find something else they need to work on.

Sagittarius
Nov. 22 to Dec. 21
Ruled by Jupiter, Sagittarians are usually very carefree, optimistic, and adventurous. They love travel and new experiences and hate to be tied down. Travel accessories, luggage, books and videos on travel to different exotic places will appeal to this sign. Gifts from other parts of the world will have special value to them. They are known to be quite sporty and active. Exercise equipment, sporting gear and YMCA memberships will be well used. To appeal to this adventure enthusiast, an outdoor adventure such as a fishing expedition or canoe trip will have them keyed up. Camping equipment, hunting gear or a new fishing pole and tackle box are good picks. Because of their indulgent nature and carefree disposition, Sag's are prone to accidents, so a traveling medical emergency kit would be a good idea. This sign is feisty and independent and willing to fight for what they believe in. Show your support by giving to a cause they are passionate about or making a donation in their name. Sag woman will appreciate gifts that will help her to be self-sufficient. They also tend to be quite superstitious, so luck charms and pieces of good fortune will be held with high regard. Sagittarius is sociable and thrives on good company. I have never met a Sagittarius who didn't love theme parks and roller coasters. One thing you don't have to worry about with Sagittarius, if he or she doesn't like your present, Sag will tell you outright.

Capricorn
Dec. 22 - Jan. 19
Prestigious Capricorn enjoys gifts that will boost their image, advance in job rank or raise their personal status. Their reputations and achievements are significant to them. Gifts to acknowledge and highlight their lifetime achievements will have monumental meaning. Recognition gifts such as an engraved name plate for the office (with the title by the name) or a leather monogrammed laptop carrier or briefcase would be fitting. Capricorn likes anything that makes him more professional. Contrary to popular belief, though, Capricorn is not all work and no play. This sign is blessed with a wry sense of humor, so try the 'The Office' series on DVD or a sarcastic comedy like Napolean Dynamite. Anything with Will Ferrell or Ben Stiller will do. Capricorn has an appreciation for tradition and family history. Antiques and family heirlooms will be a welcome present for a Capricorn. Photo albums or scrap books filled with photos of the entire family, a genealogy starter kit and anything really, really old will captivate them. If you go for jewelry, make it an old family heirloom, a fine antique piece or an ageless diamond she can pass down to her own children someday. They also have an admiration for fine theatrical and musical art, so tickets to Phantom of the Opera, The Nutcracker, or a Broadway musical are all sure to get a squeal of delight out of even the most prudent, composed Capricorn.

Aquarius
Jan. 20 - Feb. 18
Anything unusual, unique, and one of a kind will satisfy the Aquarian in your life. Aquarians are known for being eccentric and are usually surrounded by friends. Because they are individualistic, they can come across as a little impersonal at times as they often feel more content in a group of friends than in a one on one personal conversation. To play it on the safe side, you might avoid the sappy, weepy, over-romantic gifts. Aquarius are movie buffs but they tend to favor comedy, old westerns and classic action-adventure films over romance and heart wrenching tearjerkers. They are original thinkers are likely to believe in new age philosophy, so you may try your luck with a gift certificate for aromatherapy massage, reiki healing or acupuncture. Ruled by Uranus, the planet of change and the unexpected, invention and modern science and natural history, you never know what this random sign will be doing from one moment to the next. Most Aquarians possess an excellent sense of aesthetics. This is often expressed by interests in drama, music, art, and science. Astronomy is usually a very popular fascination with Aquarians so telescopes are popular gifts. They love to move around and travel so you can win extra points with a gadget they can use on the go such as a GPS system, portable DVD player, iPod, or a USB adapter for internet on the go. Cameras and video cameras to document their travels will also be a hit with them. Aquarians can be quite aloof. They are engaging, yet unreachable. An electronic communication device to help you track down and keep in touch with your Aquarian on the go might come in handy.

Pisces
Feb. 19 - March 20
These Sensitive and artistic people have vivid imaginations and an interest in fantasy. Pisces are usually the softer, dreamy types and anything romantic or sentimental will appeal to them immensely. They love gifts of all kinds, but especially ones that help them escape the realities of life. A bottle of champagne, the latest romance novel or fantasy video game will appeal to your Pisces friend. Pisces is a water sign, so they'll appreciate bath salts, foaming cleansers and shower gels. A fish aquarium or waterfall will captivate them. Pisces rules the feet so remember to treat your Pisces feet! Soft slippers, fuzzy socks, a pedicure of foot massage are all good choices. If you'd like to give something really special, pamper Pisces with a relaxing retreat to replenish energy with a day at the spa, a pedicure or massage or a relaxing day on the golf course. A digital camera will make a hit with this natural-born photographer. Pisces often have some musical talent as well so CD's and music instruments are likely to be a good choice. You can also cater to their dreamy side with a set of oil paints, a gilt-edged volume of love poetry or a Shakespearean play.

MERCURY RETROGRADE DESERVES A MAKEOVER

If you are familiar with the astrological term "Mercury Retrograde", then you're probably accustomed to the usual moans, groans and utters of pure dread about the astrological period, which is translated as, well…chaos.

"Oh, wait...Mercury is in retrograde? Hold up – stop the train! Cancel those reservations, void that check, call off all engagements!"

The word retrograde in astrology refers to the apparent backward motion of a planet thru the zodiac. Note the word "apparent here". It's an optical illusion that occurs three to four times a year as the celestial bodies in orbit change their angular relationship. Mercury retrograde occurs when Mercury appears to slow down, appears to stop, and move backward, as earth speeds by it.

Mercury has created quite a reputation for bringing disorder and chaos when in retrograde. This is because Mercury is the planet of communication and as a society we rely very heavily on communication and transferring information on a daily basis (to n understatement) When things go haywire in that area – emails bounce, mail gets returned, calls go out into dead-air, computers malfunction, systems crash, cars break down, etc., - the effect of these minor nuisances can be exasperating in daily life.

There's a long-held belief that it's best to avoid certain activities and put off making long term commitments and life altering decisions during the Mercury Retrograde period. It is thought best to postpone travel plans, delay new projects, and abstain from forming new partnerships during retrograde. But this type of belief causes anxiety and tension, which only adds more porridge to the pot.

In my opinion, Mercury Retrograde needs a new image! It needs to be depicted in a more positive light and used in a productive manner. It does not have to be looked upon with such pessimism and fear. Just like everything else in life, you cannot control what happens to you, but you can control your attitude toward what happens to you, and in that, you will master your own destiny.

The period when Mercury is in retrograde is not something to forebode with worry. It's a gift from the Universe, the gift of a universal period time for contemplation and self-reflection. It should be used for reflection and self-contemplation. Sometimes our dreams get lost as we drudge through the humdrum of everyday life. We are so ambitious and determined to reach our goals that, in the process that we lose sight of our true desires, the very purpose for which we are driven. Mercury in retrograde is a valuable time for evaluating those dreams and desires. It is a time to ponder your path and chart your future – create your destiny! Use it to reflect on your journal, review your creative work, and think about the wheels of fate that have pointed you to where you currently are in your life path. Prioritizing what's important in your life by getting in touch with your values will clarify your direction.

Write your personal story. You are the creator of your own life story. Write a new narrative of the same set of circumstances that got you to the point where you are right now. Think about the story you have been writing thus far. Discover new versions to the story. Where there was hardship, write about the courage it took to overcome. Where there was sorrow, write about the love and support from friends and family which pulled you through. Write a new version of the chapter you are experiencing in the now - with a positive attitude about where you're headed - and begin a new chapter to chart the path for where you are heading in the future.

The period of Mercury Retrograde is the perfect time to meditate, contemplate, listen to music, and catch up on sleep! You don't have to retreat to solitary confinement in total isolation from the world, but a little solitude and quiet reflection never hurt anybody. You don't have to postpone your travel plans, cancel your appointments and halt all projects, just leave extra room for chaos, mix-ups, set-backs and miscommunication, and relax!

Biggest and Brightest Full Moon of 2010 Tonight

Tonight's full moon will be the biggest and brightest full moon of the year. It offers anyone with clear skies an opportunity to identify easy-to-see features on the moon.
This being the first full moon of 2010, it is also known as the wolf moon, a moniker dating back to Native American culture and the notion that hungry wolves howled at the full moon on cold winter nights. Each month brings another full moon name.

But why will this moon be bigger than others? Here's how the moon works:

The moon is, on average, 238,855 miles (384,400 km) from Earth. The moon's orbit around Earth – which causes it to go through all its phases once every 29.5 days – is not a perfect circle, but rather an ellipse. One side of the orbit is 31,070 miles (50,000 km) closer than the other.

So in each orbit, the moon reaches this closest point to us, called perigee. Once or twice a year, perigee coincides with a full moon, as it will tonight, making the moon bigger and brighter than any other full moons during the year.

Tonight it will be about 14 percent wider and 30 percent brighter than lesser full Moons of the year, according to Spaceweather.com.

As a bonus, Mars will be just to the left of the moon tonight. Look for the reddish, star-like object.

Kicking Off 2010 With A Rare Blue Moon

By ALICIA CHANG, AP Science Writer Alicia Chang, Ap Science Writer – Tue Dec 29, 7:03 pm ET

LOS ANGELES – Once in a blue moon there is one on New Year's Eve. Revelers ringing in 2010 will be treated to a so-called blue moon. According to popular definition, a blue moon is the second full moon in a month. But don't expect it to be blue — the name has nothing to do with the color of our closest celestial neighbor.

A full moon occurred on Dec. 2. It will appear again on Thursday in time for the New Year's countdown.

"If you're in Times Square, you'll see the full moon right above you. It's going to be that brilliant," said Jack Horkheimer, director emeritus of the Miami Space Transit Planetarium and host of a weekly astronomy TV show.

The New Year's Eve blue moon will be visible in the United States, Canada, Europe, South America and Africa. For partygoers in Australia and Asia, the full moon does not show up until New Year's Day, making January a blue moon month for them.

However, the Eastern Hemisphere can celebrate with a partial lunar eclipse on New Year's Eve when part of the moon enters the Earth's shadow. The eclipse will not be visible in the Americas.

A full moon occurs every 29.5 days, and most years have 12. On average, an extra full moon in a month — a blue moon — occurs every 2.5 years. The last time there was a lunar double take was in May 2007. New Year's Eve blue moons are rarer, occurring every 19 years. The last time was in 1990; the next one won't come again until 2028.

Blue moons have no astronomical significance, said Greg Laughlin, an astronomer at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

"`Blue moon' is just a name in the same sense as a `hunter's moon' or a `harvest moon,'" Laughlin said in an e-mail.

The popular definition of blue moon came about after a writer for Sky & Telescope magazine in 1946 misinterpreted the Maine Farmer's Almanac and labeled a blue moon as the second full moon in a month. In fact, the almanac defined a blue moon as the third full moon in a season with four full moons, not the usual three.

Though Sky & Telescope corrected the error decades later, the definition caught on. For purists, however, this New Year's Eve full moon doesn't even qualify as a blue moon. It's just the first full moon of the winter season.

In a tongue-in-cheek essay posted on the magazine's Web site this week, senior contributing editor Kelly Beatty wrote: "If skies are clear when I'm out celebrating, I'll take a peek at that brilliant orb as it rises over the Boston skyline to see if it's an icy shade of blue. Or maybe I'll just howl."
