Meditation 101

"When you change your brain...
            you change your life."

"Meditation brings wisdom;
lack of mediation leaves ignorance.
Know well what leads you forward and what hold you back,
and choose the path that leads to wisdom."
- Buddha

Meditation is intimidating to those who don’t know what it is or how to do it. For some, meditation is a daily requirement. For others it is overwhelming, misunderstood, too complicated, too new-age or too weird. But its not hard to do. It’s just like physical exercise, but its mind exercise. Meditation is quite simply the art of relaxing your body and quieting your mind. It is a learned skill. Yet, if practiced with commitment, will inevitably lead to the successful quieting of the mind. It is an ongoing process. It takes discipline, just as physical exercise, that reaps benefits only from concentrated and continual effort. That being said, just like exercise, some is better than none. You may start with small increments and gradually increase your practice with time.

There are more benefits from meditation than I can list here, but overall it boils down to this; When you focus your mind you concentrate better. When you concentrate better, you perform better. You can accomplish more, whether at work, in the classroom or in the gym. Whatever you do, you do it more effectively when you meditate. There are many different types of meditation. It is found in all cultures and in all religions all over the world – because it works. Truth is truth.

The effects that the mind can have over the body are extraordinary. You don’t have to control your heart rhythm or your metabolism to benefit from the healing power of meditation. You just have to sit still, focus your mind, and practice some relaxation and breathing exercises. Some of the physical benefits from meditation are:

• Decreased heart rate
• Lower blood pressure in normal and moderately hypertensive individuals
• Quicker recovery from stress, illness and surgery
• Increase in alpha rhythms (slow, high amplitude brain waves that correlate with relaxation
• Enhanced synchronization (that is, simultaneous operation) of the right and left hemispheres of the brain (which positively correlates with creativity)
• Reduced serum cholesterol levels
• Decreased consumption of energy and need for oxygen
• Deeper, slower breathing
• Muscle relaxation
• Reduction in the intensity of pain

Some of the psychological benefits are:

• Increased empathy
• Enhanced creativity and self-actualization
• Heightened perceptual clarity and sensitivity
• Reductions in both acute and chronic anxiety
• Complement to psychotherapy and other approaches in the treatment of addiction

Meditation may seem complex for a beginner. Personally I think people make it too complicated. Sure it is overwhelming if you’re expecting to get it right the very first time. I can’t reiterate enough, it takes practice!
